A well-known figure in the UK tourism industry has written a book about her family’s struggles with Alzheimer’s disease. Documenting her life as a teenager and young adult in the Lake District town of Cockermouth, Judith Reed, one half of the long established husband and wife travel trade partnership of Steve Reed Tourism Ltd, has just published ‘Alzheimer’s and Us’.
The book, available on Amazon as either a printed book or Kindle, brings into sharp focus her family and their relationship with dementia, documenting the first worrying signs, the growing challenges and worst of all, the long-drawn out fight to be helped and cared for within the NHS. And this is a tale that rings loud and clear for many millions of people around the UK and beyond. ‘Alzheimer’s and Us’ is a fascinating account of two generations of a typical family and their difficulties in being assisted in their time of need.
‘The book began as a diary when I had to deal with my mother’s Alzheimers disease after my father’s sudden death. Prior to that, as a teenager, I watched both of my grandparents suffer from the same illness,’ explains Judith.
‘It’s been a therapeutic way for myself and my family to come to terms with what has happened over the generations – and we’re hoping it can help other people faced with similar challenges too.’
