In recognition of its achievement of being the most visited attraction in the UK in 2018, the Tate Modern is to receive the prestigious Tourism Society Annual Award at a ceremony at the House of Lords on 3 July 2019.

Tate Modern staged a wide range of exhibitions and events in 2018 attracting 5,868,562 visits, an increase of 3.7% on the previous year. The Tourism Society Award is designed to recognise individuals or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to the development and success of the tourism industry in the UK. Awards can be for lifetime achievements or to recognise success gained in the past 12 months. Previous winners include Team London, for the London Ambassadors Programme; Historic Royal Palaces, Tom Piper MBE and Paul Cummins MBE for the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, and Michael Portillo for the popular Great British Railway Journeys television series.
Tate Modern Director, Frances Morris, will receive the Award presented by Lord Thurso, President of the Tourism Society at the House of Lords on 3 July. She will speak at the event regarding the work of Tate Modern and forthcoming exhibitions. Ms Morris oversees all aspects of Tate Modern’s vision, programme and operation. This includes a diverse mix of exhibitions, commissions, collection displays, live performances, film screenings, talks and workshops.
Tourism Society Chairman, Kevin Kaley, commented: “Tate Modern’s success is a prime example of a visitor attraction investing in its premises and presenting world class exhibitions. The museum’s appeal to both UK and overseas visitors is reflected in the outstanding entry figures achieved in 2018.
