After recently submitting their bid to become UK City of Culture 2017 and being in the international spotlight for last year’s discovery of the remains of King Richard III, Leicester is a very exciting place to be at the moment.
At the centre of the city is Leicester Market, voted Britain’s Favourite Market two of the last four years and famous for being the largest covered market in Europe. Building on their 700 year history, Leicester Market is currently undergoing a £7 million redevelopment which includes a new state of the art food hall due to open Spring 2014. This together with a new public square due for completion in 2015 is at the heart of a larger city centre regeneration scheme.
Leicester Market is now preparing for the 5th annual Leicester Winter Food Festival featuring Christmas Crafts, on Sunday 17 November 11am – 5pm. Over the years the event has achieved praise for being the largest regional one day food event drawing crowds of over 20,000 people.
This year, they have plans to make it their biggest and best event yet. Coinciding with the Christmas Lights Switch On, the festival is a food lover’s dream, a sea of sizzling pans, smoking grills and stalls piled high with local cheese, breads, chutneys and cakes.
‘We recently sent out booking packs and already have had an overwhelming amount of interest from traders. We signed up a couple of excellent independent restaurants, Bobby’s Indian Vegetarian Restaurant and Maiyango Kitchen Deli to do cooking demonstrations,’ says Adam Piotrowski, event organizer.
Festival goers can also expect a variety of homemade and unique crafts. ‘The offer of Crafts continues to be a big draw for Christmas shoppers and this is just one of the reasons why the event is so popular,’ Adam Piotrowski said.
Also on the agenda is an entertainment programme packed with taster sessions, cocktail demonstrations as well as a variety of live local music and choirs.
Shaun Miles, Head of Leicester Markets said, ‘We are enthusiastic about offering a wonderful and festive day out for the family filled with everything that makes Leicester a great place to visit.’
