The annual competition, which is now in its 49th year and highly regarded as the world’s premier wine and spirit competition, received entries from nearly 90 countries worldwide. The Staffordshire-based distillery picked up the prestigious prize in the flavoured gin category.
Experts estimate that there are a staggering 3,500 gin brands and varieties in existence worldwide and some 25% of these have been entered in this year’s IWSC. This year’s competition received well over 600 gin entries, and for the first year ever, gin entries overtook Scotch.
A highly qualified and trained group of international judges awarded Nelson’s Gin ‘Rhubarb & Custard’ the Silver Outstanding certification, making this the first award for the cottage industry gin producer since the company was founded four years ago.
Nelson’s Gin Distillery & Gin School (nelsonsgin.co.uk) was the 2014 creation of Neil Harrison, who developed the award-winning rhubarb & custard recipe in 2016. Speaking about his award-winning gin, master distiller Harrison said “I’m really proud of this blend. Ingredients include natural rhubarb extract and vanilla pods from Madagascar which, when combined and blended with our London Gin, produce a smooth but invigorating flavour.”
